About Me

Testing, Testing 123: Phlebotomy Basics

When my mother underwent chemotherapy, we spent a lot of time visiting the phlebotomy lab for blood testing. I was always impressed by how easily the phlebotomist was able to find and puncture a vein to draw blood on the first try. I knew there had to be a method to it, and was astounded by how effortless and painless they made the process. It led me to research a lot about blood tests, from drawing to the actual screening. I've created this site to share what I've learned in the hopes of teaching others. The more you understand, the more control you can have over your own health care.

Tips To Help Keep You And Your Family Healthy

by Francisco Arnold

Individuals will often assume that managing their health simply involves visiting the doctor when there is an obvious problem. However, there are other steps and actions that should be taken to help ensure that you are able to avoid serious medical problems while being prepared for those that arise.

Make Sure You Get A Yearly Flu Vaccine

Influenza (the flu) can be a serious disease to contract. For most people, the flu will involve several weeks of being extremely ill before they start to recover. This can be an extremely disruptive problem that may cause you to miss substantial amounts of work. Some patients may develop complications or particularly severe cases of the flu, which can lead to death or hospitalization. By receiving a yearly flu vaccine, you will be able to greatly reduce the chances of contracting the flu.

Know The Warning Signs Of Common Medical Emergencies

There can be many life-threatening medical emergencies that individuals experience. For many of these problems, a fast response can be essential for limiting the damage that occurs and potentially saving the life of the patient. This can be particularly true for instances of heart attacks and stroke. Additionally, it is important for all of your family members to be mindful of the warning signs if one of the members of the family suffers from a chronic medical condition.

Have Your Doctor's Information Readily Available

In the instance of a medical emergency, you may not have the time to search for your doctor's contact information. This can complicate the process of providing treatment. Keeping the phone number of your doctor's office saved in your phone will make it much easier for you to provide this information when it is needed. If you suffer from potentially life-threatening chronic conditions or allergies, investing in a medical alert bracelet can also be useful as it will alert paramedics to the presence of your condition.

Take Advantage Of The Convenience Of Walk-In Clinics

Unfortunately, there can be times when your normal doctor may be too busy to see you in a timely manner. When this is the case for relatively minor medical ailments, it can be tempting to simply go without having them treated. However, this can expose you to the risk of protracted recovery and a higher risk of complications. Walk-in medical clinics can be a convenient solution to this problem as they will typically be able to see patients relatively quickly.
