Testing, Testing 123: Phlebotomy Basics

When my mother underwent chemotherapy, we spent a lot of time visiting the phlebotomy lab for blood testing. I was always impressed by how easily the phlebotomist was able to find and puncture a vein to draw blood on the first try. I knew there had to be a method to it, and was astounded by how effortless and painless they made the process. It led me to research a lot about blood tests, from drawing to the actual screening. I've created this site to share what I've learned in the hopes of teaching others. The more you understand, the more control you can have over your own health care.

What To Do If Your Teenager Is Addicted To Drugs Or Alcohol

by Francisco Arnold

Living with an addiction is difficult for anyone, but it can be especially difficult when a teenager becomes addicted to drugs or alcohol. As a parent, it can be heartbreaking to learn that your child is using drugs and alcohol in a destructive way that is ruining his or her life and is also putting stress on the family. However, it is important to remember that you are the parent, and how you react will make a big difference. Parenting a teenager who is addicted to drugs or alcohol is very challenging, but there can be light at the end of the tunnel. If you have reason to believe that your child is suffering from an addiction to drugs or alcohol, use the following tips:

Do Your Best to Stay Calm

Discovering that your child has a drug or alcohol addiction can be shocking and extremely stressful. As a parent, you may experience a wide variety of feelings and emotions, which is completely normal. However, no matter how upset you are, the best thing that you can do is remain calm so you can think clearly and determine the next steps to take. If you are a parent of a teen who has developed an addiction to drugs or alcohol, remember that you are not alone and that it is not your fault. Responding with love instead of anger can go a long way during this type of situation.

Initiate a Loving Conversation

No one ever sets out to become addicted to drugs or alcohol. Addiction is very complicated, and it can be hard to understand, especially for a teenager who is abusing drugs or alcohol. When you have reason to believe that your teen has drug or alcohol addiction issues, initiate a conversation to learn more about what is going on in his or her life and ask questions about his or her friends. Many people, including teens, who have addiction issues feel shame about using, so a confrontation typically only leads to anger and arguments.

Locate an Appropriate Addiction Treatment Center

If your child has a drug or alcohol addiction, please do not think that you can help him or her on your own. No matter how much you love your child, addiction issues are best treated by professionals in a dedicated drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility. While searching for an addiction treatment center, try to find one that has a program that has been specifically developed to help treat teenagers.
