Testing, Testing 123: Phlebotomy Basics

When my mother underwent chemotherapy, we spent a lot of time visiting the phlebotomy lab for blood testing. I was always impressed by how easily the phlebotomist was able to find and puncture a vein to draw blood on the first try. I knew there had to be a method to it, and was astounded by how effortless and painless they made the process. It led me to research a lot about blood tests, from drawing to the actual screening. I've created this site to share what I've learned in the hopes of teaching others. The more you understand, the more control you can have over your own health care.

Memory Care Facilities: What They Offer And Tips For Choosing A Facility

by Francisco Arnold

Older individuals needing help with daily living often need assistance with memory issues. As people age, their minds are sometimes not as sharp as they once were, and some older people have Alzheimer's disease.

Patients with Alzheimer's require different care than other patients because of memory issues. So, how can you ensure a loved one with memory issues can get the care they need in a nursing home facility.?

Nursing Home Memory Care

A memory care facility is often located inside a larger skilled nursing facility. This means some nursing homes also have a memory care unit. A patient in this type of facility can participate in activities in both units.

The activities do differ between the regular nursing home wing and the memory care unit. Patients in memory care get specialized treatment and care and at different times than the regular activities.

Types Of Services

The care required depends upon the seriousness of memory loss. Those with mild to moderate dementia require a different type of care than those with severe dementia or late-stage Alzheimer's disease.

The nursing home workers can help with daily living tasks including bathing, dressing, and grooming. These facilities are there to help when family members aren't able to watch over their loved ones.

Those with dementia often wander and are in need of 24-hour care. A nursing home facility with a memory care unit is equipped to keep those with memory issues safe and from wandering away.

Those with serious dementia often forget who they are or where they are. They have a lot of difficulty with daily tasks. These patients are often not able to participate in crafts or planned trips. Other specialized care includes:

  • Working on cognitive abilities
  • Continuing with hobbies and passions
  • Closely monitor health
  • Safe programs and activities based on patient abilities

Qualities To Look For In A Memory Care Facility

Those suffering from dementia need a surrounding that offers encouragement, enjoyment, and feeling of purpose. The right atmosphere and care are necessary to ensure the patient can maintain current skills.

There are some things you should look for when choosing a skilled nursing facility for a loved one with dementia.

  • A warm welcoming atmosphere
  • A place offering a secure setting
  • Offers individualized care
  • Offers quality services
  • Offers enriching activities

The facility should also offer a highly trained team of caregivers. This includes nurses with good initial and ongoing training. The ongoing training keeps the caregivers up to date on the latest in memory care and dementia techniques.

Contact a memory care facility for more information.
