About Me

Testing, Testing 123: Phlebotomy Basics

When my mother underwent chemotherapy, we spent a lot of time visiting the phlebotomy lab for blood testing. I was always impressed by how easily the phlebotomist was able to find and puncture a vein to draw blood on the first try. I knew there had to be a method to it, and was astounded by how effortless and painless they made the process. It led me to research a lot about blood tests, from drawing to the actual screening. I've created this site to share what I've learned in the hopes of teaching others. The more you understand, the more control you can have over your own health care.

What Are Some Causes Of Erectile Dysfunction?

by Francisco Arnold

It is completely normal for a man to have difficulty getting an erection occasionally. However, if you deal with this issue on a regular basis, you might be dealing with erectile dysfunction. This condition can be frustrating, but there are some ways to treat it. You may be wondering why you are dealing with this problem. The following are some possible causes of erectile dysfunction.

High Blood Pressure

When your blood pressure is too high, your blood vessels can be damaged. This prevents proper blood flow through your body. Blood flow is required to get an erection. When your blood is not flowing properly, you may have trouble achieving an erection.

Diabetes

Those who have diabetes may also experience erectile dysfunction. Type 1 and type 2 diabetics can have issues achieving an erection because the disease affects your blood circulation. Diabetics can also have problems with nerve function, which is also necessary for an erection.

Cardiovascular Issues

Blood is an important part of achieving an erection, so any type of cardiovascular problem can impact your ability to achieve an erection. Coronary artery disease, clogged arteries, and high cholesterol can cause erectile dysfunction.

Kidney Disease

Renal disease and kidney problems can also be a contributor to erectile dysfunction. If you suffer from both kidney disease and have erectile dysfunction, this may be why.

Hormonal Issues

If you suffer from hormonal problems, you are at a higher risk of developing erectile dysfunction. Low and high thyroid levels can often cause erectile dysfunction. If your testosterone levels are too low, you may also develop this condition.

Medication

Certain medications can prevent your ability to achieve an erection. Medication used to treat blood pressure, sleep aids, antidepressants, prostate cancer medication, and others can cause erectile dysfunction. Changing medications may help, but you need to discuss this with your doctor.

Depression

If you suffer from depression, it may be impacting your ability to achieve an erection. Depression can lead to a low libido and decrease your appetite for sexual activity. Treating your depression may also have a physical benefit in treating your erectile dysfunction.

Performance Anxiety

It is completely normal to have anxiety about sexual activity. If your anxiety gets too strong, it can impact your ability to have an erection.

If you suffer from any of these issues and also have erectile dysfunction, talk to an erectile dysfunction doctor about it. Making some small changes in your lifestyle and getting treatment for outlying conditions may make all the difference.
